Year 2008
Access date 10.06.2009
Abstract

This session will present data from the authors' ongoing study of US-based institutional review boards (IRBs) and their processes around reviewing online research-based protocols. This study, Internet Research Ethics: Discourse, Inquiry, and Policy, is examining over 1000 IRBs and their policies for reviewing online research, including surveys, online ethnographies, and online data sets. The study, funded by the National Science Foundation, seeks to present a comprehensive review of the ways in which IRBs are managing the emergence of online research. Various aspects of the study will be highlighted in this presentation, including a discussion of the frequency and types of online research reviewed, the types of ethical issues confronted most frequently, decision making models, and evaluation of the extant guidelines, such as AoIR's Ethical Decision Making and Online Research. The presentation will be of interest to researchers and policy makers concerned with the regulation of research.
